In 1996 I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. At seventeen months of age, he began an eight-year battle with many different illnesses which included excessive childhood illnesses, colds or the flu, high fevers, pneumonia, bronchitis, bladder infections, enlarged adenoids, ear infections, constipation, and bladder problems. He didn't sleep and neither did I. Most of our time was spent in a doctor's office, at the ER, or the X-ray lab. He was never well for more than two weeks at a time. When he was free from an illness, he had to have constant supervision. He was moody, he could become violent, or he would experiment with things that could be dangerous to him and others. I have spent over $100,000 and traveled as far as Massachusetts for help. Once given this Autism diagnosis, most professionals, including educational professionals, just blamed whatever the problem was on the Autism.

He was unable to attend a typical classroom, he was three-plus-grade levels behind, and he could not read. I was in behavioral modification classes to help us live together. Over the years many professionals and friends have suggested residential school. With tears in my eyes I would say “that is not for my son”. I knew that residential living may be a reality someday but not until I had tried everything else first. The miracle came and I have
